Pre-college drawing classes at Carnegie Mellon

UniversityMaryland Institute College of Art ’08

Summer painting program at the International School of Painting, Drawing & Sculpture in Umbria, Italy – Including a landcape painting seminar with Israel Hershberg

At the Maryland Institute Dylan studied under Mark Karnes whose intensive studio courses reinforced his passion for perceptual painting. “In naturalistic perceptual painting one must have a mastery of tonal drawing, an eye for light and atmosphere as well as an understanding of the importance of concision in mark and color.” Dylan has also been influenced by Edwin Dickinson, Giorgio Morandi and Jean Baptiste-Camille Corot. “Looking at the work of Corot (and his predecessors) from the Italian campaigns has instilled in me an appreciation of medieval and gothic architecture in landscape and a desire to find analogous subject matter in the modern world. I’ve come to appreciate the immediacy of watercolor and wash drawing because it can greatly minimize the space of time between observation and response. I would hope that my work conveys the particularity of my visual experience.”
